This week’s market will feature music by singer-songwriter Kali Stoddard-Imari, nonprofit guest Habitat for Humanity, and the second and final visit of the season by On The Edge Knife Sharpening. With the late summer bounty coming in full force, our produce farmers will have plenty of summer and fall veggies and fruits, and, as always, there will be plenty of specialty foods and artisan fare, as well. The Wakefield Farmers Market takes place at Hall Park, on the shores of Lake Quannapowitt, each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from June 18 through October 15, 2016.
Playing at our market for the first time, Kali Stoddard-Imari is a New England (Vermont born) singer-songwriter who now resides in Boston MA. He fuses his musical past with Americana, Island, and Folk to create his own genre of Rock/Indie/Alternative music. This market manager heard him playing at the Melrose market and was quite impressed, and even more so after listening to his CD, self-titled Kali. Come have a listen. You won’t be disappointed.
Our nonprofit guest is Habitat For Humanity of Greater Lowell. Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell services 15 towns in the Greater Lowell/Merrimack Valley community, including Wakefield and Reading.
WHAT’S COOKING? Last week I planned to make Round (Cucurbita pepo) Zucchini Squash with Lemongrass, Onion, and Corn, but, since Flats Mentor Farm had not been able to harvest any round squash for last week, I used Kousa squash from Farmer Dave’s, instead, along with lemongrass from Flats, and corn and onion from Kelly’s Farm. It was really good, but, having made it at home with the round squash, I recommend using it if available. Recipes are posted on our website and hard copies are available at the Market Kitchen tent. Stop by between 10-11 or so to find out what the cooking demo will be about this week. Chances are that Bitter Melon with bee the feature this week. As always, all the main ingredients will be sourced that morning from our farmers and specialty food vendors. And remember: If you see something at one of our farmers’ tents that you want to try, let us know and we will get it, wash it off, and chop or slice it up for you to try!
Yarrow or Blake will be with us this week bringing their super balloon twisting skills, we will have the Kid’s Activity tent set up and stocked with plenty of paper and crayons. As always, there will be hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, and jump ropes on hand for kids of all ages, and we now have an extra tent and chairs set up so folks can take a break from shopping in a bit of shade.

Now, here’s what you’ve been waiting for – this week’s vendors!
Produce: Regular and sugar pumpkins will be aplenty this week, and many of the hard squashes aer definitely coming into season. But, we are still in the wonderful late summer harvest time where just about all your favorites are available, from summer berries to crisp apples and husk cherries, summer and winter squashes, lovely greens, beans, tomatoes and corn. Bring big bags and stock up for freezing and canning from Farmer Dave’s, Kelly’s Farm, and Flats Mentor Farm. Along with their Asian veggies and more, (did you know you can freeze lemongrass? Ask at the cooking demo.) Flats has the most amazing beets.
Pasture-raised Meats, Poultry, and Eggs: Lilac Hedge Farm can meet all your needs for a wide variety of cuts and types of beef, pork, lamb, and poultry, as well wonderfully fresh eggs. AND – it is time to order your Thanksgiving Turkey! They have a handy online form at lilachedgefarm.wufoo.com/forms/2016-thanksgiving-turkey-form. Turkeys will be delivered to the Melrose-Wakefield Winter Farmers Market at Memorial Hall in Melrose on November 20.
Cheese: Jane of West River Creamery has, by far, the best cheese around, all from pasture-raised cows and goats. You can try a samples before you decide on your purchase. Jane also brings an assortment of her lovely pickled veggies, and, if we are lucky, she will have their fresh mozzarella on hand.
Seafood: The Fish Lady will be here with an assortment of freshly caught local seafood from Red’s Best. Show up early before your favorite sells out! You can also call Michelle at 781-929-5358 or email her via [email protected] to place a special order.
Specialty Foods: Coutt’s Specialty Foods will be back this week with their traditional “old New England” style preserves. Deano’s Pasta has wonderfully delicious pastas, including a wide assortment of raviolis, and sauces, and Samira’s Homemade has very best Middle Eastern foods. Have you tried their olives? REALLY good. And, Vermont Gourmet Candy Dish will be back with their delectable jams, sauces, and the best horseradish around.
Baked Goods: You will find simple yet elegant artisan loaves at Mamadous’s, sweet and savory baked goods, as well as superb sandwiches, from Swiss Bakers, and The Popover Lady will be back this week with her amazing popovers, as well as scones and pies. For great cookies, don’t miss a stop at Goodies Homemade, and for the very best granola, as well as yogurt and local honey, see the folks at Roasted Granola.
Beverages: Downeast Cider House is here this week. You have to sample their Pumpkin Cider. Really. And, as always, our friends at Pour Man’s Coffee will have their amazing hot and cold beverages, including the best coffee around, and deliciously unique sweet treats. You can also purchase Fair Trade coffee that Dean’s Beans blends especially for them.
Pet Treats: Emmett’s Edibles will have all you need to stock up on healthy treats for your dogs and cats friends.
Artisans: On The Edge Knife Sharpening will be here! Look for the van next next to Swiss Bakers. Kaleidoscope Soap and Salem Street Beadery will also be with us,as well as Alison Simcox with the great books written by her and Doug Heath about Lake Quannapowitt, Breakheart, and The Fellsway. Trow’s Treasures is also able to join us, bringing healing salves, herbal eye pillows, catnip toys, and essential oil sprays.
As always, along with accepting credit and debit cards, we also proudly welcome SNAP/EBT transactions in exchange for “Market Bucks.” Our market continues to match SNAP/EBT purchases up to $10 per visit so all of our neighbors can afford to eat healthy local foods. COMING UP: For music: September 24: Banjo extra-ordinaires Ed Britt and Don Borchelt. and Kev G Mor on October 1, as well a return visits by Amy Spillert (10/8) and Kali Stoddard Imari (10/15). Drumlin Farm’s Audubon Ark will make their annual appearance on September 24, and there is still more in the planning, including a fun pop-up art program for kids on 10/15. Plus, rumor has it that the Pop Up Library might make an appearance or two before the end of the season!
