Thank you for your interest in becoming a Board Member of the Wakefield Farmers Market.

The mission of the Wakefield Farmers Market is to provide our community with access to fresh, locally-grown produce and artisanal goods while supporting small-scale farmers and small batch producers. We strive to create a welcoming atmosphere that celebrates our community, promotes environmentally-friendly practices, and fosters connections between farmers, artisanal producers and consumers. By doing so, we aim to contribute to the local economy, promote food security, and educate the public about the benefits of eating locally and seasonally.

As a board member of a farmers market, your duties may include:

  1. Strategic planning: Work with other board members to develop and implement a long-term strategic plan for the farmers market.

  2. Attend 5 to 6 meetings during the market season: Jan/Feb, March, April/May, June, September and volunteer at least 3 markets during the season.

  3. Financial management: Review financial statements, help set budgets, and make financial decisions for the market.

  4. Policy development:  Work with the Market Manager to develop and enforce policies related to vendor selection, product standards, safety protocols, and other important issues affecting the farmers market.

  5. Marketing and promotion: Work with the Market Manager to develop and execute marketing and promotional strategies to increase the visibility of the farmers market in the local community.

  6. Community outreach: Work with local organizations, businesses, and government agencies to promote the farmers market and build partnerships with other community organizations.

  7. Vendor relations: You may be asked to serve as a liaison between the market manager and vendors, helping to resolve disputes and address concerns, if the market manager cannot.

  8. Volunteer management:  Work with the Market Manager to develop and manage volunteer programs to support the operations of the farmers market.

  9. Event planning: may need to assist the Market Manager in executing special events, such as fundraising events, to support the farmers market.

  10. Governance and compliance: Ensure that the farmers market operates in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations and that the board follows best practices for governance and accountability.

Overall, as a board member, your main responsibility is to help ensure the success and sustainability of the farmers market by providing leadership, direction, and oversight, along with supporting the efforts of the Market Manager.
